Organized Cancer Screening Programs

Organized cancer screening program

The Bremen Cancer Registry participates in the evaluation and quality assurance of organized screening programs according to national standards.

This includes on the one hand the structured mammography screening program, that has been introduced in 2009 nationwide in Germany. Every two years, women aged 50 to 69 years receive a written invitation to early breast cancer detection.

The mammography screening aims to detect changes in the breasts of women free of symptoms as early as possible, in order to increase the chances of recovery as well as the quality of life of breast cancer patients.

An important aspect of this program is the regular scientific investigation and evaluation of the benefit (reduction of mortality) and quality compared to possible risks such as overdiagnoses. Cancer registry data are of great importance to this evaluation and are considered an international standard.

The Bremen Cancer Registry therefore regularly transmits aggregated data to the responsible reference center and compares data in order to detect tumors diagnosed during the screening interval (so-called interval carcinoma). Thus, it can be checked if the goals of the mammography screening program have been achieved.

For other organized screening programs, e.g. for colorectal cancer or cervical cancer, the Bremen Cancer Registry transmits pseudonymized identity data and medical data to the trust center. There, the data are compared with the results from the cancer screening examinations.
